We call for an end to the unlawful and undeclared wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Yemen, throughout Africa and elsewhere and would require the President to obtain Congressional approval for the use of military force.
The United States has lost thousands of soldiers and spent TRILLIONS of dollars fighting an unofficial, undeclared war in multiple locations throughout the world over the past two decades. This has happened for all the wrong reasons. The U.S. military has become an aggressive, attacking force, rather than a defensive force. It has become involved in undeclared wars around the world without official Congressional declarations of war. We support the defensive use of military force ONLY when authorized by Congress.
We demand:
- The end of wars of aggression and regime change
- The end of the new arms race
- Reduction of the military budget by hundreds of billions
- Stopping the demonization of foreign leaders
- The end of coups d'état (Venezuela, Bolivia, Ukraine)
- The end of economic warfare (sanctions)
- An end to AUMFs (Authorized Use of Military Force)
We agree with the 2014 Vermont Progressive Party Platform:
"Although a well-trained military is necessary for national defense, military expenditures must be weighed in the context of domestic priorities. We oppose the concept of military spending as economic development.
We will work to:
• End the occupation of Iraq and the on-going military commitment in Afghanistan/Pakistan.
• Support all proceedings to hold accountable any violators of the U.S. Constitution, international laws, and/or treaties.
• Restrict National Guard troops from assignment to war zones.
• Prohibit the use of torture.
• Oppose preemptive war.
• Support non-military initiatives and policies to resolve international conflict.
• Ensure veterans receive medical, emotional, and financial support according to their service-related disability."
We agree with the Peace and Freedom Party Platform of 2014:
"Peace and International Justice
The drive for greater profits by multi-national corporations which direct U.S. foreign policy is a major cause of war. We stand for peace between nations and the right of all peoples to self-determination... We therefore call for:"
- "The U.S. to renounce nuclear first strike, and take the initiative toward global disarmament by eliminating all of its nuclear, chemical and biological weapons.
- No U.S. intervention anywhere. End all support and aid to repressive regimes and all military and police training aid everywhere. End efforts to destabilize foreign governments. End U.S.- directed economic warfare against other countries. Abolish the CIA, NSA, AID and other agencies for interference in other countries' internal affairs. Withdraw all U.S. troops and weapons from all other countries.
- Stop all U.S. arms exports and trade.
- Dissolve all military pacts.
- Convert from military to peaceful production; reallocate the resulting "peace dividend" for social benefit.
- Abolish the Selective Service System.
- No weapons in space.
- No drones for killing or invasion of privacy."
We agree with the 2016 Libertarian Party Platform:
"American foreign policy should seek an America at peace with the world. Our foreign policy should emphasize defense against attack from abroad and enhance the likelihood of peace by avoiding foreign entanglements. We would end the current U.S. government policy of foreign intervention, including military and economic aid. We condemn the use of force, and especially the use of terrorism, against the innocent, regardless of whether such acts are committed by governments or by political or revolutionary groups."
"We support the maintenance of a sufficient military to defend the United States against aggression. The United States should both avoid entangling alliances and abandon its attempts to act as policeman for the world. We oppose any form of compulsory national service (i.e. a draft)."
We agree with the 2012 Constitutional Party Platform:
"We condemn the presidential assumption of authority to deploy American troops into combat without a declaration of war by Congress, pursuant to Article I, Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution.
Under no circumstances would we commit U.S. forces to serve under any foreign flag or command. We are opposed to any New World Order, and we reject U.S. participation in or a relinquishing of command to any foreign authority.
The goal of U.S. security policy is to defend the national security interests of the United States. Therefore, except in time of declared war, for the purposes of state security, no state National Guard or reserve troops shall be called upon to support or conduct operations in foreign theaters.
We should be the friend of liberty everywhere, but the guarantor and provisioner of ours alone.
We believe that all defense expenditures should be directly related to the protection of our nation, and that every item of expenditure must be carefully reviewed to eliminate foreign aid, waste, fraud, theft, inefficiency and excess profits from all defense contracts and military expenditures."
We agree with the 2016 Constitution Party Platform:
"Since World War II, the United States has been involved in tragic, unconstitutional, undeclared wars which cost our country the lives of many thousands of young Americans. The United States has increasingly played the undesirable role of an international policeman. Through our involvements abroad our country is being changed from a republic to a world empire in which our freedoms are being sacrificed on an altar of international involvement. The United States is now committed by treaty to defend foreign nations in all parts of the world, and by agreements other than treaties to defend more. Therefore, we call upon the President, and Congress, to immediately commence a systematic withdrawal from these treaties and agreements, each of which holds the potential to plunge America into war in some far-flung corner of the earth."
"We demand that: never again shall United States troops be employed on any foreign field of battle without a declaration of war by Congress, as required by the United States."
The United States maintains 800 military bases worldwide at a cost of $100+ billion a year. This is money that can be spent at home creating jobs, rebuilding infrastructure, and investing in the future of the people. The disastrous war in Iraq cost trillions, the seemingly endless war in Afghanistan has been going on for nearly 20 years and we spend more on our military than the next 8 countries combined. Despite countless lives lost and destroyed, terrorism has only gotten worse. It’s time to end the wars and the perverse monetary incentive structure that makes politicians flippant about sending young men and women to die.
Unilateral U.S. military force should only be used as a last resort to defend the nation. The current budget could be cut drastically if we used our department of defense for what it was intended — defending us, instead of waging interventionist wars."
We agree with Brand New Congress:
"Though our government has claimed to intervene in foreign affairs in the name of promoting democracy and security, military intervention has often resulted in the exact opposite for ourselves and the rest of the world. It’s time we reorient our foreign policy to focus on diplomacy and cooperation that will promote peace and prosperity for all.
The irresponsible and destructive post-9/11 wars in the Middle East resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands, the further destabilization of the region, and our troops being stuck in Afghanistan with no clear end in sight. By destabilizing multiple states and creating power vacuums that allowed terrorist groups to gain power, the U.S. government helped plunge Syria into chaos and expanded the territory of terrorist groups. George W. Bush’s rush to war created a political vacuum in Iraq that ISIS exploited. We need to turn the page on this track record of destruction, chaos, and military adventurism under the pretext of lying to the American people but claiming the purpose was to “expand democracy.”
When the Cold War ended, the U.S. national debt was 4 trillion dollars, and it is now nearly 20 trillion, due largely to our wars of choice, which have only made life worse for ordinary people. It is clear that constant armed intervention is not the answer. But neither is isolationism. Cutting ourselves off from the world and preventing the tired, the poor, the huddled masses to join the American family is both senseless and heartless. Isolationism is damaging to our economy, our global reputation, and the environment, not to mention a clear violation of American values. We should be actively taking in refugees and participating in global programs to peacefully and democratically promote democracy.
We believe that America must play an active role in the international community in order to advance peace, support democratization and human rights, and protect the global environment."
